Welcome to the Dictionary of Movements

This is a resource for animators to utilize when coming up with subtle movements for particular scenes. Sometimes even the greatest writers get writers block. When they do, they grab their thesaurus, so to with any creative endeavor there comes the time for research.

Human movement patterns visually communicate social cues to which other humans are exquisitevly sensitive. Movement can and does continually convey emotion and attitude when observed in social situations. Without movement there would be no animation. But what happens when the animator is unsure of what to have a character do during a scene? He turns to the Dictionary of Movements for some suggestions and inspiration.

The focus will be on movement in social situations between two or more humans.

I will be building a catolog of subtle to grandious movements that can be used by animators to add that extra little somthing to an animation in the same way the writer looks to the dictionary or thesorous for assistance or inspiration.

(Note this is a work in progress and has just been started. Right now it is lists and text descriptions. But I aim to eventually have images representing each movement, or links to video showing the movement in a film, or animation that myself or other contributors create for the wiki. )

This site will be helpful in many situations, among them are: non-dialog shots, acting shots where only one character speaks, keeping the characters alive during pauses in dialog, and these movements will be great exercises just themself for the animator to practice.

Hopefully other animators will find this usefull, i know I have been. I am alwasy looking for that one little movment that just makes the scene, that one look, that one small gesture. This project is not a cheat sheet or a shortcut, but a source of information. Somthign to add into your reference footage or to spark ideas that on your own may have never occured.

So feel free to contribute your own movements and feelings as I am sure I have missed out on many, that we can all help inspire each other to be the best animators possible.
